About event
Sheer sandstone walls, coloured chalk, and crisp winter air - Kalbarri Gorge delivers three days of adventure, camping, and unforgettable climbing. Join CAWA for the long weekend as we explore the Z Bend, dodge the crowds at Four Ways, and soak up the wild beauty of WA’s remote red heart.

Escape the city and head north with CAWA this WA Day Long Weekend - Friday 30 May to Monday 2 June 2025 - for an unforgettable climbing trip to Kalbarri National Park. Home to the dramatic Murchison River Gorge, Kalbarri offers a true wilderness climbing experience: stunning red walls, dramatic landscapes, and some of the best winter climbing conditions in WA.
Roughly a 6.5-hour drive from Perth, the gorge provides a range of climbing options - trad, high-level sport climbing, bouldering, and even deep water soloing for the adventurous. Most climbing is concentrated around the Z Bend, but for those looking to explore further afield, areas like Four Ways offer solitude and variety. Hawk’s Head features moderate trad routes, and the Wonderwall offers a remote deep water soloing experience combined with a scenic hike - perfect for a rest day or low-stakes fun.
Winter is prime climbing season, with cool temperatures, solid friction, and no flies. And for climbers looking to reduce visual impact on Kalbarri’s vibrant sandstone, we recommend using coloured chalk, such as the Redpoint Coloured Chalk Ball (refillable and environmentally conscious).

This is one of CAWA’s most-loved trips - so whether it’s your first time or you’ve been dreaming of getting back on those walls, don’t miss it.
CAWA membership is required. Limited spots - book early!
⚠️ Important: This is not a guided event. Participants are responsible for their own safety, gear, and skills. CAWA does not provide instruction or supervision.
Climbing Guidebooks
The main guidebooks to the area are Northern Rock and West Australian Rock. These will give you a good idea of climbing on offer. More routes have been posted on the forum since the above publications; here are some of them:
Further route information will be provided during the trip, and checking theCrag never hurts.
Requirements
At CAWA, safety is our top priority. All participants must adhere to the following guidelines:
Climbers are independent and are responsible for themselves.
Inexperienced climbers must partner with an experienced climber before the trip.
All participants must sign a Deed of Release and Indemnity (if they haven’t done so previously), book the camping, and complete the participants’ form below.
A parent, guardian, or responsible/qualified adult must accompany climbers under 18 years old.
If you’re newish to climbing, be sure to check out CAWA Trips for additional information and reach out to us via email.

Redpoint Coloured Climbing Chalk - Kalbarri's Gold
We’ll be camping together at the climbers’ campground, making it easy to team up for routes, share gear or beta, and enjoy the evenings. CAWA will coordinate basic group logistics and communications, but the trip is entirely self-supported - you'll need to bring your own water, food, gear, and transport.
Please note: Kalbarri is not suitable for beginners unless accompanied by a competent and experienced climbing partner. Route access often requires lead climbing, and the ability to set top ropes is limited. The climbing tends toward moderate to hard grades, and a solid understanding of outdoor climbing safety and techniques is essential.
