About event

Step beyond the bolts and learn the foundations of trad climbing.

Ready to move beyond sport climbing and explore the world of traditional climbing? Join CAWA for a two-day Introduction to Trad Climbing Workshop at Wilyabrup, one of Western Australia’s most iconic sea-cliff climbing areas.

This hands-on workshop is designed for climbers who are confident lead climbing outdoors on bolts and want to develop the skills needed to safely climb on removable protection. Over the weekend, experienced guides will take you through the core principles of trad climbing - from placing gear to building anchors and managing risk on singlepitch-style terrain.

Wilyabrup offers excellent cracks, solid limestone and varied routes that make it an ideal learning environment for developing trad skills. Throughout the workshop you’ll practise placing and assessing protection, building anchors, and understanding route management and trad ethics.

Participants will stay at Gracetown Caravan Park from Friday to Sunday (two nights included), giving everyone time to settle in on Friday evening and maximise learning time across the weekend.

During the workshop, you’ll cover:

  • Placing and assessing traditional protection (cams, nuts, etc.)

  • Anchor building and gear removal

  • Top belays and rappelling

  • Trad lead climbing techniques

  • Route assessment and trad ethics

Saturday will run as a structured instruction day, while Sunday will provide an opportunity to consolidate skills and enjoy climbing in a supportive environment.

This workshop is ideal for climbers looking to take the next step in their climbing journey and begin climbing safely on gear.
