About event

Build the skills to move beyond single-pitch climbing — then put them into practice.

Ready to take your outdoor climbing beyond a single pitch?

Join internationally qualified climbing instructor Stu Matheson, one of the lead ACIA instructors in AU, for a practical two-day introduction to sport multi-pitch climbing, designed for experienced single-pitch outdoor lead climbers wanting to build the skills and confidence to venture higher.

Day 1 – Learn the systems

Saturday is a comprehensive skills workshop at Monkey Rock, where its shorter granite routes and multi-pitch options provide a useful environment for introducing multi-pitch systems. You’ll build on your existing outdoor lead climbing experience and work through essential skills including:

  • gear selection and what to carry on route

  • belaying from above

  • different belay and anchor setups

  • stance and rope management

  • retrievable and self-protected abseils

  • lowering your partner

  • emergency considerations and options

Day 2 – Put it into practice

On Sunday, it’s time to take those skills onto longer terrain. Under the guidance of Stu and experienced CAWA guides, you’ll put the systems from Day 1 into practice on suitable multi-pitch routes, with the final climbing location selected according to conditions and the group. This will most likely be run in Porogurups National Park.

We’ve secured a private campsite, conveniently located close to West Cape Howe.

Camping is available on Friday and Saturday night for $10 per person, per night and can be added to your workshop booking.

The site is suitable for tents and rooftop tents and has a drop toilet and solar-heated shower. It’s a simple, relaxed base for the weekend and a good opportunity to spend some extra time with the group in the evenings.

Location will be sent out individually.

Requirements

At CAWA, safety is our top priority. All participants must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • All participants must sign a Deed of Release and Indemnity (if they haven’t already), and complete the participant’s form below.

  • A parent, guardian, or responsible/qualified adult must accompany climbers under 18 years old.

This workshop is for experienced single-pitch outdoor lead climbers. It is not an introduction to outdoor lead climbing.

Participants must:

  • Hold a valid gym lead climbing pass.

  • Be comfortable lead climbing grade 16 or higher outdoors.

  • Be confident lead belaying and cleaning single-pitch sport routes.

  • Know essential climbing knots, including the figure-eight on a bight, clove hitch, classic prusik and French prusik.

  • Bring their own climbing equipment, including harness, climbing shoes, helmet, belay device, 60 m dynamic rope, personal safety equipment/PAS, slings, prusiks and a minimum of four locking carabiners.

With only 10 places available, the workshop allows plenty of opportunity for hands-on practice and individual guidance.

Workshop: $179 per person — less than $90 per day for two full days of instruction and practical climbing.

Optional camping is available Friday and Saturday night on private property near West Cape Howe for $10 per person, per night and can be added when booking.
