About event
Helping climbers make the leap from gym to crag.
Join us for an outdoor climbing day focused on transitioning experienced indoor lead climbers to the outdoor climbing environment. Participants must be a minimum of 16 years old and hold a valid lead pass from at least one, ideally two, Perth climbing gyms. The pass must cover both lead climbing and lead belaying skills.
This workshop is exclusively for CAWA members who are proficient in lead climbing indoors and are looking to confidently make the transition to outdoor climbing.
This comprehensive workshop covers crucial topics to ensure a safe and successful transition to outdoor climbing. You'll learn about weather assessment, route finding, and the various types of bolts and anchors you'll encounter outside. We’ll also delve into the specifics of gear selection, effective communication techniques, and safety protocols tailored to the outdoor environment. The afternoon session provides hands-on experience on the wall, where you'll practice safe belaying/climbing, cleaning anchors, and dealing with potential challenges unique to outdoor climbing.
By the end of this workshop, you’ll have the knowledge and practical experience needed to approach outdoor climbing with confidence. Don’t miss this chance to expand your climbing horizons and explore the great outdoors under expert guidance.

Skills You Will Learn
Pre-Climb Preparation:
Planning your climb and checking weather conditions.
Understanding and interpreting route information.
Bolt and Anchor Knowledge:
Identifying different types of bolts and recognizing unsafe anchors.
Proper use of gear, including harnesses, ropes, and quickdraws.
On-the-Wall Practices:
Safe belaying techniques and effective communication.
Clipping at bolts and managing quickdraws.
Anchor Management:
Cleaning anchors and safely lowering off routes.
Techniques for handling overhanging and traversing routes.
Requirements
Must have a gym lead pass; be able to lead climb and lead belay indoors already
16+ years old
Participants must bring their own climbing shoes, harnesses, and belay devices with a locking carabiner.
It is strongly recommended that climbers also have a minimum 50m lead rope, helmet, quickdraws, personal anchor, and a few extra locking carabiners. While required eventually, it's understandable you might not have these just yet. In this case, there is no need to worry; we'll have spares; just let us know.
In the event of unfavourable weather conditions, the workshop will be shifted to earlier or cancelled. You will receive notification at least 24 hours in advance if this occurs. A full refund will be processed in case of cancellation.
